The journey of the leader generally begins with solid
technical skills and a proclivity toward management. Increasingly, the human
and conceptual skills of the leader are engaged. Over time, experience,
coaching, and classroom training provide opportunities to enhance the skills of
the emerging leader.
Pushed up the organizational ladder and challenged by
management, peers, and subordinates alike, the leader faces varied and complex
demands from within the organization. External threats - both individual and
corporate - increase pressure on the leader. At the same time, professional
support opportunities wane at the heights of the organizational
ladder.
Through the creation of
Sustaining Leadership groups, Leadership Circles, participants
develop a forum for ongoing, long-term discussion of leadership concepts and
practical application, while enjoying essential but too-rare peer support.
Facilitated for structure and support, the group builds primarily upon the
shared skill, experience, and wisdom of the participants.
Enveloped by a growing trust, the group shares problem
solving as individual members present workplace challenges and potential
solutions. Assumptions are revealed in the pursuit of personal growth and
learning.
A suggested basis for the ongoing
Sustaining Leadership groups,
Leadership Circles, is Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline: The
Art & Practice of the Learning Organization, a management text
distinguished by the personal nature of the disciplines and, therefore, ideal
fodder for ongoing authenticity, credibility, and personal growth for
leaders.
Given the unique needs of a specific Leadership
Circle, particular texts or materials will be
recommended.
We would be
pleased to meet with you to discuss particular challenges or opportunities,
tailoring TerraSys Consulting services and support to meet those specific
needs.
